Bring earplugs or headphones
The hotel was pretty cool. We stayed in the annex motel. It was well decorated, comfy and clean. The staff were nice. Restaurant had yummy dinner. Our only complaint would be the noise. The traffic outside and what sounded like drag racing was a bit much when trying to fall asleep. I also wouldn't recommend looking up the crime rate in Gallup before bed. Everything that was within the hotel's control was great.

Worth a stay
The hotel itself is beautiful and the history behind it is amazing and a must see. Front desk staff was fantastic. The issue we had was the restaurant and the “ historian.” We had dinner in which I asked for red on my enchiladas, it came out with green instead. Told waitress and she brought it out with red ontop with Parmesan cheese ontop. Cut into it and all they did was pour red ontop of the green. Never seen that. Also, they shotlet patrons know it’s only a two drink maximum when they get there. Only was allowed two drinks. Since we were traveling we want to relax for the night. After dinner we came down to sit by the fire. But were greeted very rudely by an elderly man and the first thing out of his mouth was “there’s not any alcohol in those glasses?” Not even a “hi, my name is….” The bartender mentioned we could take our last drink with us to our room so we did and decided to sit by fire. NOT!!! So, the rest of the night we felt like we were in jail since we had to stay in our room to finish our drinks. By this time we were so frustrated with everything, we hung out in our room. We came out to look around at the hotel but once again the historian watched our every move. Ridiculous!! Very sad because the place is stunning and the history behind it is very interesting. We are from Albuquerque and know all about Gallup and the news it provides. Still worth a stop, but don’t expect too much from service in the food part.

Wonderful stay in Gallup!
This was a wonderful surprise! I booked the El Rancho because of the many excellent reviews it had received, but our stay was even better than expected. The property is beautiful and fascinating, filled with historic treasures. Dinner at their restaurant was delicious as was breakfast the next morning. All in all, we highly recommend it!

Unique hotel but skip the bar/restaurant
The pictures on the website make this hotel look way better than it is. Cute place and atmosphere but the ac was blowing hot air. Do not go to the bar/restaurant as we faced discrimination and were barely served. That is why my review is worse.

2/10 Poor

Unsafe and Unprofessional
Hotel completed a mandatory evacuation for a carbon monoxide leak during the night and DID NOT EVACUATE US. Went down to check out to find security guards staring at us whose response was “we thought the hotel was empty and had no record of you” After we checked out I received a text from hotel asking us to come to front desk as there was an evacuation, so clearly trying to cover themselves once they realized what they did. We had two young children in our group. I would recommend nobody ever stay here.

6/10 Good

Great renovation job but service was lacking
I wanted my stay to be amazing. I lived at this hotel for a few weeks as a child so was feeling nostalgic when I made my reservation. And they've done a great job with the renovation of the hotel. The lobby area is beautiful and the “annex” rooms are fully-decked out in Route 66 kitch. But we had problems from the start. I’d specifically reserved a room in the old part of the hotel (the area where I’d stayed as a child) and, though the hotel had texted me earlier in the day to let me know they would be available to help me with anything during the stay, she failed to mention that I wasn’t going to get my room due to some kind of a gas leak in the main hotel. So had to settle for an annex room. Then went to the 49er Bar and Restaurant for drinks and dinner and both were packed with people and terribly under-staffed. Even the staff were complaining about it. Luckily we were in no rush. Had a comfortable night in the annex but awoke to a message that the hot water would be turned off at 9 am (2 hours before check-out time) for some kind of repair. Again, no advance warning. We had to change our morning plans and scramble to get showers. Was just really disappointed by the service. Hoping this was an isolated weekend of problems because otherwise, the hotel could be a really fun destination for Route 66 enthusiasts.

Interesting older hotel. Nice break from cookie-cutter chains. Friendly, helpful service from desk and room staff. Had breakfast and dinner in hotel restaurant, well above average and reasonably priced. Will return.
