Clean
The room was clean and big and the staff were courteous. We were just wondering why the television turns on in the middle of the night. We stayed there for 2 nights and the TV just turned on. We did not use the timer.

A local gem
I spent three nights at Rakurakuan with a friend in October. We agreed that if we're fortunate enough to return to Kyoto, we will definitely stay there again. The hotel was excellent value for money. It had spacious (by local standards) rooms that were spotless and stylish, comfortable beds, and a great shower. We loved the location on a quiet and atmospheric street. Buses and the subway were nearby and it was an easy walk to the train station and to the historic part of the city. The staff were absolutely wonderful. They were polite, friendly, and very helpful. On our last day we were able to leave our luggage with them all day as we continued exploring the city. They made a wonderful restaurant recommendation that was a local favourite (delicious) and they helped us call a taxi on our last day. I would love to stay here again any time!

Size of the room is good and not cramp. Very spacious. The staff are very helpful even to the point of helping my daughter wear her kimono. :) Hotel is one station away from Kyoto station. We recommend this for anyone visiting Kyoto.

Fantastic Accomodation not to be missed.
Beautiful, spacious, clean and view of tower. Decor splendid. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Very big room with plenty of storage, fridge and bathroom spotless with toiletries. Quiet and excellent location with supermarket close by. Walking towards the hotel the streets are full of traditional homes you just can't stop taking photos. This accommodation is faultless you get more space, value for money and tradition compared to big chain hotels.

The room size was great and we enjoyed our 3 nights here. The staff could not have been more helpful. They sorted out an issue with another hotel we couldn’t get to because of the typhoon for which we were really grateful. We were waved off like friends when we left.

Exceeded all Expectations!
Totally unexpected, but this place was amazing! If you judge it by the exterior and location, you would be so misled. Inside the room was spacious, comfortable and simply fabulous. Plus, the next morning, the hosts made us the best breakfast we had on our entire 10 day trip.

Nice and clean, but lacking
Decent central location, clean, and nice staff, but seriously lacking in attention to detail and experience. Good: - checked us in early and had our bags in our rooms when we came back later - staff are friendly - Central location - beds were comfortable Not so good: - it's "machiya style" design-wise, but cheaply done - there's nowhere to eat breakfast downstairs, so you have to go to the buffet, get the food on a tray, get on the elevator and then somehow open your room door with a tray of food in your arms. Then you have to eat on a tiny table that is only suitable for one person, let alone the four people our reservation was for. Plus there are only two chairs in there anyway. At the very least they should provide a cart to bring your food back to your room. - no rug/carpet so the floor gets dirty quickly - emergency light by the door (probably a legal thing, but still) is always on so it's never really dark - the electrical outlets are on sometimes and off sometimes, so they either have some electrical issue or it's a weird power-saving strategy. Either way, you can't depend on charging devices overnight. Basically it's a good place to sleep, but other than that I can't really justify the price point.

Ticks Many Boxes
A newly renovated hotel. Large bedroom, comfortable bed and a relaxing breakfast room service. 5 minutes walk from Gojo subway station, 15 minutes walk from the centre of things such as Nishiki market. Quiet area and very friendly staff. We enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful room, courteous staff
Very clean, modern room with beautiful, traditional Japanese art decorating room displayed in alcoves with spot lighting. Like staying in a Japanese art gallery. Fixtures and ac/heat unit seem new and top line. Miss Tomi was extremely courteous and helpful, called us cabs, stored luggage, answered questions. In a quiet neighborhood, a short cab ride from Kyoto station was most economical for our party of 4, about 600yen.

Good location, very limited service, smoky lobby
The location of the hotel is good. Quite convenient. Staffs gave good recommendations on where to eat. For some reasons, they didn’t clean our room the first day so no clean towels were provided. The second day, they tried to clean the place at 4pm while we’re in the room. We asked them to come back later but they never did. Luckily they gave us some clean towels. The staffs are normally in the staff room but if you don’t ring the bell, you don’t see them around. Although it is supposed to be a non smoking hotel, the lobby is always very smoky. Our room was on the ground floor. The room itself is spacious and comfortable with a nice garden but it can get noisy at night when other guests coming in or going out of the hotel.

Traditional Style Kyoto Guesthouse.
Room was new, spacious, comfortable and well finished - looked pleasingly Japanese. The hotel is a little off the beaten track, about 10 min walk to nearest metro station and 25 min brisk walk to central/downtown Kyoto. Hotel didn't have any laundry facilities; though there's a coin launderette about a 5 min walk away.

Nice hotel off the main path in quiet neighborhood
Hotel is a small nice hotel located away from the busy tourist section of Kyoto. It was a bit hard to find if you are not familiar with Kyoto (and Japan addresses in general), but it looked exactly like the picture so that made it easy. Very clean, roomy, and friendly staff. Great place to stay!
