8/10 Very good

This is a clean, simple and very good little hotel in the small, quaint town of Breil Sur Roya. Nothing fancy but still good quality. The room was clean, the sheets crisp (yes, crisp!) and the mattress the best I slept on in my three week tour of France (I like a firm bed). The location right on the lake was ideal. The town itself is wonderfully old; buildings learning in over narrow streets and the old Cathedral — that tolled out the hour, twice an hour from 8 am to 10 pm — was truly reminiscent of old town Europe. (This cathedral was a special place. It was super old and smelted and felt like it. It wasn’t as fancy but there was heart in it. We went to Mass at 17:00 and when we entered, it was just us. BUT the organ was playing to an empty church. We sat and listened to it's haunting tones until the doorkeeper, an ancient old French woman appeared and, in broken English, told us the Father was down “in the valley” and there would be no more mass. Just lovely, lovely anyway.) The hotel was a good rest stop with a nice restaurant right next door and a great bakery just behind. This place had long been a place of mine to see since a quick thirty-second train stop where I glimpsed the place; glad that I made the effort for the return.
