The beautiful waterfalls at Spiliotissa Gorge are hidden in wild nature, in a gorge running between the villages of Choudetsi and Agios Vassilios. The trail is fairly level, though, making this a good choice for families. From Choudetsi, walk a forest trail with overhanging trees, and cross a rustic wooden bridge over a small stream.

You’ll be amazed by the serenity of the landscape and the water cascading down bright green, moss-covered rocks. You’ll pass old churches and a 14th-century monastery too, and the entire trail feels like a mystical throwback to times gone by. While the trail is easy, it can be slippery with uneven steps to climb in places, so wear shoes with a good grip.

The tavernas blend seamlessly into the scenery with their stone façades and rustic charm, and they’re tucked under ancient trees, making fantastic, Instagram-worthy photos. 3. Sarakina Gorge

4. Mylonas Waterfall

5. Boutsinas Waterfall

6. Kourtaliotiko Gorge

A unique experience in southern Crete

If you’re brave enough to plunge into chilly water to get close to a stunning waterfall, Kourtaliotiko Gorge is for you. On the eastern side of the impressive mountain, Kouroupa, this gorge is known for its waterfall. But access is not for the faint-hearted. From the parking lot, you’ll walk down a steep path, then swim around 24 meters through a cave.

Once you reach the main waterfall, the water isn’t as deep. You can stand up and see your efforts well rewarded. The mossy slopes are teeming with water pouring into the pool, and you’re in the center of the action. It’s an incredible sight. Don’t forget a waterproof bag if you’re planning to swim to the waterfall.

7. Richtis Waterfall & Richtis Gorge

Located at the eastern end of the island, the natural beauty of Richtis Waterfall & Richtis Gorge is bewitching. The shortest hike to the waterfall is just over a mile, but it’s challenging in places, so it’s not suitable for younger children. Arrive early at the Richtis Gorge parking lot as it fills quickly, then cross the stone bridge to begin your hike. Have cash ready for the entrance fee, as cards aren’t accepted.

Listen to the frogs and cicadas accompany you on your trek to the waterfall. Clear streams thunder down a vibrant green, moss-covered backdrop. You can even swim under the waterfall, so don’t forget your waterproof pouch. Afterwards, drop down to Richtis Beach for equally stunning vistas.
