Make sure there are no weddings happening!

An old-school hotel... Rooms are spacious and clean and renovations are well done. However stairs need cleaning. We saw the reviews about being noisy during events and thought we were safe on a Monday night. Who would have thought someone would host a Monday wedding? No sleep until after 11!

A classic full of history, but DECADENT.

Apparently the room had used bedding, since there was a pillowcase with lipstick marks and long strands of dark hair, in addition to the other pillowcases and sheets being with several strands of long hair and other numerous short strands. The cleaning also left something to be desired, since there were, for example, lamps with a lot of dust. In addition, broken elevator, broken towel washing machine (which can justify the apparently used bedding and with hair and lipstick). There were also no towels for the beach. The impression I had is that the previous guest left the room and they simply ran their hand over the house and stretched the sheet and crumpled the pillows. I don't recommend it.

Great escape

4 nights. 2nd stay in a month. We love the location and this time we got a better room where the a/c worked great. Just a great escape from the cold in Virginia.

Disappointed

We were only there for a total of 2 nights. We had to move to three different rooms in that short time span due to hot water not working in our first room, as well as tvs not working, ceiling fans, light switches, wall outlets all out of commission in some of all three of the rooms. Got a phone call while we were out in town the first day of our visit asking us to return to the property before 3 o’clock because they moved us to the wrong room the night before and guests were set to check in the room we were in. We then were moved to a third room. While we were there we were told other guests had been charged for the wrong room and we heard a family checking in being told they had a room for 1 night , but were told they had it for 2 nights before their arrival. There was also a wedding reception taking place our first night that we were not informed about so it was loud and crowded every turn we took that night. The hotel is historic and beautiful but management is not on top of things at all and it could use a good over all heavy duty cleaning, especially the carpet and rugs thoughout the hotel. A lot of updates to furniture and amenities in general needs to be made. With all the mishaps that took place during our stay I feel as though there are probably other incidents as well.

Great room size. The air conditioning would not go below 72. Thankful for the windows that opened for fresh air. Our room was across from housekeeping and they were very loud in the early morning. Other than that, great location and the front desk girls were awesome!!

Meh, won't stay there again

Location was good and the the room was clean. Great beach access. Close to shops/restaurants, many of which are closed on Mondays. Hotel's Penthouse bar had good happy hour specials. The room location within the hotel was not so good. It was next to interior stairs and side exit where bar goers congregated and talked loudly outside our room after an evening of drinking. This activity was just two doors down from the front desk so they had to have known it was happening. It didn't appear that any effort was made to curtail that activity which went on for 30 minutes or more. Exterior accent lighting shone brightly in the room at night which the blinds could not shield. No side table on one side of the bed and bedside outlets for charging were scarce. The front desk was kind enough to move us to another, more peaceful room for our second night. Furnishings in both rooms we're quite humble and bathroom fixtures were functionally challenging. Cast iron tub/shower was extremely slippery and there were no grab bar in first room. We held on to the window sill for safety. The first morning we had an early appointment and hoped to snag something to take with us for breakfast. Unfortunately, at 6:10 am (6am breakfast start time) there was NOTHING out for the self-serve breakfast so we had to leave with nothing. There is no reserved parking although public parking was close by. There were a fair number of homeless hanging out in the area but we never felt unsafe.
