Old Town Catania
Old Town Catania dazzles with volcanic stone buildings and stunning Baroque architecture at every turn. Explore the ancient Teatro Romano ruins or wander through Piazza del Duomo with its iconic elephant fountain and cathedral. The lively La Pescheria fish market offers a genuine slice of Sicilian life with vendors shouting over colourful seafood displays. Family-run trattorias serve authentic pasta alla norma throughout the narrow cobblestone streets. Most attractions sit within walking distance, though uneven volcanic stone surfaces can be challenging. Converted historic palazzos now house charming boutique hotels and B&Bs with original frescoes and high ceilings.

Borgo-Sanzio
Borgo-Sanzio gives you a peek into real Catanian life away from tourist crowds. Students from the University of Catania bring youthful energy to this affordable district. Wander the quiet streets lined with local shops, or hop on the metro to explore nearby Via Etnea and Tribunale di Catania. St. Agatha Al Borgo Catholic Church offers a peaceful moment amid your explorations. Area trattorias serve authentic Sicilian meals at prices that won't break the bank. Three convenient metro stations—Borgo, Giuffrida, and Italia—connect you to Catania's attractions. Budget-friendly guesthouses and apartment rentals make this residential area perfect for travellers seeking value and local flavour.

Picanello-Ognina-Barriera-Canalicchio
Picanello-Ognina-Barriera-Canalicchio offers a peek into authentic Catanian life away from tourist crowds. Colourful fishing boats bob in the Ognina harbour against volcanic stone quays, while the seaside promenade invites leisurely strolls with Ionian Sea views. History buffs can explore the Landing in Sicily Museum, and nature lovers will enjoy Gioeni Park and the small beaches along the coast. Budget-friendly trattorias serve fresh seafood at prices well below city centre rates. Local B&Bs and family-run hotels provide affordable accommodation with personal host interaction. Getting around is simple with AMT city buses connecting to central Catania in just 15-20 minutes, or hop on the metro at nearby Galatea Station.

Catania City Centre
Catania City Centre wraps you in Sicily's dramatic history, where black volcanic stone buildings create a striking backdrop for your wanderings. The magnificent Cathedral of Sant'Agata anchors Piazza del Duomo, while ancient Roman ruins peek between medieval streets. Browse La Pescheria fish market where vendors' calls echo through marble-lined arcades and the scent of fresh catch fills the air. The area buzzes with traditional trattorias serving arancini and pasta alla norma between baroque churches and ornate palazzos. Boutique hotels in converted historic buildings offer frescoed ceilings and intimate courtyards for your stay. Most attractions sit within walking distance, though expect uneven cobblestones and steps throughout this compact district.

Contrada Pantano d'Arci
Contrada Pantano d'Arci blends industrial grit with emerging creative spaces where artists and designers breathe new life into former warehouses. The beaches of Catania and Spiaggia della Plaia are worth exploring, making this budget-friendly area more than just an industrial zone. The nearby Catania-Palermo highway and railway connections make day trips around Sicily a breeze. Hungry travellers can dig into hearty Sicilian fare at authentic workers' trattorias serving pasta alla norma and perfect arancini. Basic guesthouses and converted industrial spaces offer no-frills lodging at prices that'll make your wallet smile. A hire car is your best bet for getting around, with ample parking throughout the area.

Learn more about Catania
Between the brooding presence of Mount Etna and the sparkling Ionian Sea, baroque splendour awaits in Piazza del Duomo. Marvel at the city's iconic elephant fountain before diving into the sensory overload of the Fish Market, where vendors banter with the same theatrical flair found at the opulent Massimo Bellini Theatre. Via Etnea offers retail therapy with volcano views, while Ursino Castle provides a medieval counterpoint to the city's predominantly baroque character. After dark, the university district transforms into a vibrant nightlife scene where tables spill onto ancient piazzas. Don't miss the chance to sample arancini from street vendors – these crispy rice balls reveal why Sicilians take their street food so seriously.

Duomo Suites & Spa
"This property is incredible. First and foremost, Simone was such a wonderful concierge. From the moment we arrived, she made us feel welcome and truly set the tone for an amazing stay in Catania. The room was modern, spotless, spacious, and had the most beautiful view of the Duomo. Waking up to that view was something special. I only wish I had more time to stay at the hotel and enjoy it. And don’t forget to check out the rooftop. The views over Catania are absolutely beautiful and the perfect way to take in the city. A fantastic property, an incredible location, and wonderful hospitality. I would absolutely stay here again."

"Our stay was wonderful"
Di Prima Albergo Diffuso.
"My family and I were stranded in Catania recently, when our flight was grounded for several days due to volcanic activity. We were fortunate enough to have found this gem of a hotel and I can’t begin to express how grateful we are to the family that runs this place. Their kindness to us during a very stressful time was heartwarming. And the hotel itself is amazing. There is an elevator onsite (a real treat among most smaller European city hotels). The rooms are beautiful, clean, and spacious, equipped with a kitchenette, a balcony, and air conditioning. The hotel breakfast (included) was a godsend, as was the onsite restaurant, where we had some of the most delicious meals we had in our month-long stay in Sicily. And the hotel’s location, right in the center of town, allowed us to explore many parts of Catania on foot. The entire staff went out of their way to make things easy and comfortable for us, even driving us to and from the airport when our flight was cancelled yet a third time! If you are ever in Catania do not even consider staying anywhere else!"
B&B Hotel Catania City Center
"Chambre agréable et bien rénovée. La chambre était très propre. Le petit déjeuner n'était en revanche pas extraordinaire"

4 tips for savvy savings when booking a hotel in Catania
- Book for the cheapest times: Visiting Catania on a budget can be a rewarding experience, with the most affordable periods occurring in January, February, and December when hotel prices may drop to lower prices. For a great value for money trip, consider staying for at least 2 to 3 days, which is ideal for exploring the city's key landmarks, historical sites and cultural attractions. This includes notable monuments, historical cathedrals, churches, quaint cafes, culturally rich university areas, museums and walking routes that showcase the city's heritage.
- Look for last-minute deals on Hotels.com: Explore Catania hotel deals on Hotels.com by visiting the DealsOpens in a new window section, where you may discover discounted rates on hotels close to your travel date. For those seeking last-minute options, the Last-Minute Deals section could help you find available rooms at reduced prices. With the Smart Shopping feature, available via the app, you're more likely to see a useful comparison tool that assesses hotel prices and amenities, ensuring you stay informed about any potential savings opportunities.
- Be flexible with dates: Prices tend to vary due to factors such as the hotel's location, star rating, and season, so being flexible with your dates may help you save on your stay in a Catania hotel. For those interested in unique experiences, boutique hotels might provide a more personalised service and potentially better value. When you book via Hotels.com, we will indicate whether the price for your chosen dates is above or below the average, and if it appears to be on the higher side, we may suggest more affordable dates to help you find a better deal.
- Consider your location: Hotels near the city centre usually tend to cost more, but thanks to Catania's excellent public transport links, you may find an independent hotel further afield that’s still well connected and more likely to be affordable. For those wishing to explore alternative, less crowded neighbourhoods or even lesser-known nearby towns, there is often excellent value for money. Opting for these alternative destinations could provide a more authentic and budget-friendly experience.
