Disappointed
I booked the same room type for the way through and the way back. The first night was the room I booked, but kitchen nor Tavern was open. They did not let me know that at time of booking. Had to supper on over priced chips. The way back the lady at the counter tried to put us in dungeon type room she said that I booked for handicap access. Was very rude when I questioned and asked for the room that I booked, which was a room with a Mountain View. Got put in a room in the back of the hotel. Was given one key card, when asked for a second one got an attitude. Later saw two different couples checking in. One average, one more wealth. First couple got dungeon room second couple got Mountain View.

They had no heat in the lobby, museum are and ball room. They had kerosene heaters setup but not running, fireplace was lit with a heater fan beside it. Did not heat up the lobby. Hallway in morning was cold. Elevator need some care. No where to sit have a drink until 5:30. Breakfast said Continental with a "surcharge". Did not stay to eat breakfast, was disappointed. This hotel has been a staple in the area and I was disappointed in the care of it. Oh, not all employees were welcoming and front desk was left a few times when we needed to ask question or checking out.

Beautiful building. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Only complaint would be that the restaurant and tavern was not open. Stayed here many times before always enjoyed having breakfast and late night drinks in the tavern

So weird
This was the weirdest hotel stay we have ever had - and we've traveled extensively as a couple and a family. There was absolutely no heat on in the entire building. The front desk clerk had her winter coat and gloves on like it was totally normal! The freezing temps in the lobby and restaurant areas were not temporary. We had to turn the small unit on in our room when we arrived; luckily it did work. The lights flickered in the restaurant area, and the elevators did not work. My husband pointed out that the "Elevator not in service" sign was in a frame, so again, not a temporary issue. We had to carry all bags up the stairs with no offers to help nor suggestions for a first floor room for my elderly parents. There was a continental breakfast, but we (all guests in the restaurant area) were chastised when we used the waffle maker, including a young couple with a toddler. The hotel itself is very interesting, so it's sad that they appear to have run out of funds for renovations - or they just don't care about comfort for guests. The Natural Bridge State Park is directly across the street and is a wonderful 2 mile back and forth walk. This is the best perk of staying in the hotel.

Great place to stay!
Overall the hotel was nice and had lots of wonderful historic qualities. The beds were amazing for comfortable sleeping. The only thing that wasn't the best was the food in the tavern it could have been better and it was pricey. Other than that we had a wonderful stay and everyone was very hospitable. I loved the history of the place and the fact that you could walk to the Natural Bridge place from it very convenient!

Not what I expected
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. Our first room had no electricity, and they promptly gave us a different room. I did appreciate that service. Additionally, the online description says they offer infant cribs. When I asked the concierge he looked at me like I was crazy. The new room had signs of poorly repaired and possible recent water damage. And the bathroom was full of mold and mildew. I mentioned the issues when we checked out (for context we checked in around 11PM and checked out before 8AM) and received no apology. I’m very frustrated. We were planning to stay there on our return trip too but I’ve cancelled the reservation.

NICE WEEKEND TRIP
My wife and I enjoyed our weekend stay. We enjoyed the ambiance of the hotel, which was different from your run-of-the-mill modern hotel. Had wanted to see the Natural Bridge for a number of years and we added a Va Tech football game too.

This is a nice and well kept historical property. The room was clean and pleasant. It had a great shower. The bed was plush and comfortable. I enjoyed looking through the room with historical memorabilia next to the office. The visitors center and trail for the natural bridge were right across the street. The only downside was the food at the restaurant was terrible, although the proprietors were very kind.

The blonde female at the front desk was rude and quite ungracious at check-out, but fortunately she was the only unpleasant encounter we had at this property . . . Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay here!
