We loved this place! The house is about 100 years old, with wooden floors, low furniture, beautiful soji screens and a tiny garden. It is centrally located in a small, intimate neighborhood and within walking distance to the main train station and subway lines, as well as several grocery stores and restaurants. The kitchen is old, but completely functional. Shower is in an add-on, covered area and there is a washing machine right there on site. Beds are located upstairs. It was pretty cold when we were there, but the electric heaters kept the entire house warm and cozy.
The owner and our most gracious host made sure that our every need was met. She also informed us of a special, lantern/light festival that was going on at the Kyoto shrines and temples at that time. We were so glad that we went and probably would not have known about it, if it were not for her. Staying at Korakuan was a nice get-away from the, "hotel life," for a few days and a chance to live like the locals do. We'll definitely stay there again, the next time we are in Kyoto.
